Jack Ellsworth with famous American jazz trombonist, composer, conductor and bandleader of the Big Band era- Tommy Dorsey - Providence, Rhode Island 1948

It all started when…

as a young boy, Jack Ellsworth began collecting records -with a dream to one day share his favorite music and have his own radio show.  After his work as a Marine combat correspondent during WWII,  being sought after by MGM for movies and developing friendships with the likes of  Bing Crosby, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and even Frank Sinatra, Jack decided to pursue his dream of radio.

In 1948, Jack walked into WHIM in Providence, his record collection under one arm, hoping for a job.  Fortunately, a smart program director heard Jack's golden voice, noted his amazing knowledge of current music, hired him on the spot and gave him his own show.  "Memories in Melody™" was born  and today it is one of the longest continuous running shows in the history of radio!

After moving back to Long Island and helping start WALK, one of the number one stations in the New York Market, he went on to become Program Director and General Manager for two decades and then ultimately went on with his wife Dot, to purchase their own station, WLIM.  After hundreds of awards, countless acts of community service, being inducted into the Big Band Hall of Fame and over 60 years in radio, Jack asked his young grandson, Matt Taylor to co-host the show with him in 2009.  From early childhood Jack introduced Matt to all of the standards and great music of the 20th century and taught him everything he knew about radio.

After Jack lost beloved wife Dot in the summer of  2013 Jack  then 91, continued the radio show with his grandson by his side. Just 8 weeks later Jack became ill and from his hospital bed, he asked Matt to continue the radio show in his place because "this great music needs to be heard." Matt has fulfilled his "Poppy's" request and today "Jack Ellsworth's Memories in Melody" is still tremendously popular- airing on numerous stations with literally  over 150 advertisers over the years, (Many of whom  have stayed on the show for decades because of the positive results.)  The show has had a loyal following for generations  with a strong 45+ listening audience. Memories in Melody is one of the rare radio shows today where you can hear a blend of Ballads, Blues and Big Bands too... old and new!

While many radio shows focus on one era or one genre, Jack's grandson, 25 year old Matt (an accomplished and sought after musician himself with nearly two million views on YouTube) proudly continues the tradition and  adds a unique distinction to the show. By still hand-selecting LP's from Jack's original  collection of Golden Era Standards and seamlessly creating segues with the best music of the last 40 years, Matt is adding a fresh, young perspective so that this great music can be enjoyed by listeners of all ages everywhere.

New affiliates… and remembering a Legend

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the passing of Jack Ellsworth, host Matt Taylor’s grandfather. Jack is still a true radio legend here in New York and known and respected among American radio greats from 1948-2013. As the founder of Memories in Melody, we can think of no better tribute than to keep this great music alive, as he so often requested. In continuing his legacy, we are continuing to expand the syndication of Memories in Melody. Not only are we being heard nationally, but now all over the world!… an accomplishment that he and his wife Dot never even dreamed of. We now have feedback showing listeners from the UK, Greece, Germany and Spain to as far as Russia, China, South Africa, Hong Kong and New Zealand! While our main listening audience is right here in the good ole’ USA, our wide appeal proves the timeless class and appeal of our program. What a better day than today, to keep Jack’s life and life’s work going by announcing the addition of three new affiliates!

Ronkonkoma, NY: JVC Broadcasting, one of the leading independent and locally owned radio broadcasters in the country announces a partnership with the longest running radio program on the Long Island airwaves, Jack Ellsworth’s own Memories in Melody. The show will air from its new home 103.9 FM on Sunday mornings from 7AM-9AM and will stream on the WRCN 103.9 app and on line at www.linewsradio.com The first show will air on January 8th, 2017.

Jack Ellsworth's Memories in Melody Radio Show, one of America's longest running radio shows that has been on the air for over 68 years is now hosted by Jack's grandson Matt Taylor. At Jack's request Matt has been continuing the radio show tradition, until last week when the show lost its radio outlet. Not to let an iconic radio program and a Long Island tradition vanish from the airwaves JVC Broadcasting contacted the Ellsworth family and together they found a new home for the program and a new opportunity for the tons of radio fans to continue the tradition Mr. Jack Ellsworth, also known as the Silver Fox, started over 65 years ago. The Long Island radio dial will continue to have the sounds of Ballads, Blues and Big Bands too... old and new for all to enjoy now in digital FM stereo!

In addition to airing the program on JVC owned 103.9FM, the family is in discussion with JVC to add the programming to other JVC radio stations in the company’s portfolio and are working to syndicating the program as well.

JVC Long Island VP and COO Vic Canales adds, “This is great music that needs to be on the radio. Jack Ellsworth created a brand and his grandson Matt and the entire family are continuing the tradition and building on the masterpiece that Jack created, we are proud to be a small part of that. Canales continues and it is so nice to see young people like Matt and his sisters totally devoted to radio and continuing the radio tradition that cuts so deep in his family, this is exactly what radio needs”.

Memories in Melody VP, Producer and Jack Ellsworth's daughter Susan Shiebler said, "It is truly an honor to be welcomed so warmly into the highly esteemed JVC Broadcasting Family. My father's dream was to see the best music of the 20th century endure with an emphasis on the heart of radio and a relationship with the listeners. To have decades of his passionate and tireless work appreciated by John and Vic and their team opens many new possibilities. The greatest way to honor Jack and Dot Ellsworth's radio legacy is to keep it alive, and that was their hope. We are so grateful to JVC Broadcasting as we work together to uphold this time-honored tradition of great music and radio the way it should be."

JVC CEO and President John Caracciolo says, “JVC Broadcasting is and always will be dedicated to giving all of our clients, both advertisers and listeners, the best and most diverse programming possible. I grew up listening to Mr. Ellsworth and when I began my radio career on Long Island he was already a Long Island legend. His show grew to become the most well known, well respected programs on the Long Island airwaves. We are the only independent, locally owned radio company on the Island and it is only natural that we help his family keep Memories in Melody on the Long Island radio dial. Both Vic and I are very proud to be asked to continue to carry the torch Jack lit many years ago”.

Tune in to the first Memories in Melody show on 103.9 FM on January 8th, 2017 at 7AM, or stream the program live at www.linewsradio.com

JVC Broadcasting was formed in July 2009. The company operates over one dozen radio stations.
